Producer

Gid's Produce is another one of our Amish farms, and has been in the family for over 100 years. It was originally a dairy farm until Gid bought it in 2003 and converted it to a produce operation. His farm truly is a family operation, involving his 9 children!

Reflecting on what he enjoys about farming, Gid notes how great it is to "all work together as a family, and work outside in the sun and with the soil" and how sweet strawberries, smashed fresh, with sugar can be.

Gid's Produce uses IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices on their farm to minimize pesticide usage. IPM is often used in conjunction with naturally grown or organic practices, as it prevents insects or insect damage while minimizing risks to people and the environment. Practices include biological controls (think application), manipulating the habitat for insects, and modifying cultural (i.e. farming) practices.
